Welcome

Welcome to our blog. Our family has recently embarked on an incredible journey. We have moved from our small town in the United States to a large city in Southeast Asia. The adjustments are going to be many and we want to share our adventure with you. We have been led to this country with a two fold purpose. Kenny will begin honing his photography skills and put them to work. And of course, as followers of Chri$t, we pray that we will be salt and light to those we encounter and build relationships with along the way. We hope you enjoy our journey and come back often!

Adventures Continue

(You cannot believe how sorry I am that I don't have photos and videos to go with this post!)

We are moving…again. We have some friends who went back to the states for their six months of refreshing and, fourteen months later, due to visa issues are having to come back to another city. However, the contract on their house is good for another year and a half, so we have decided to move to that house. It is only about two blocks from the school, so it will be much more convenient this year.

The adventure came last night when we all went over to the house to look around and chat with the helper who is living there. We were standing in the living room when we looked up and saw a "toke" (toh-kay) above the window. The lizards we have in our house are small and just scurry around on the walls at night. We have at least five living in our house right now. It is no big deal. But toke's are a different story! A toke is slightly aggressive. We have heard that if it bites you it will not let go until you kill it. Everyone is pretty afraid of them even though they are pretty common.

So, Kenny asked the helper if she knew it was there and she quickly said no and brought him a metal rod to kill it with. What followed was a hysterical comedy of jumping, screaming and dancing around the living room and dining room. We learned that they can jump pretty far and they can withstand several whacks from a metal rod. Kenny looked like he was doing some kind of traditional African dance as he hit the toke and jump at the same time. I am so sorry that words just can't begin to describe the hysteria! You should have been there!

When it was all over we apologized to the helper for being so loud and chaotic, even though I noticed her laughing the entire time as well. She just smiled and said, "Saya senang," which would translate something like, "I enjoyed it." Once we disposed of the dead toke (which withstood at least five blows before going to meet his maker) we piled back in our car and left the poor helper alone to her usual peaceful, quiet home!
