14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. - Ephesians 3:14-19
Last Sunday night our speaker talked about these verses. He used an example that really stood out for me. He talked about being at home and how your home is where you are supposed to be able to kick back and be yourself; just be totally you. In verse 17, that is the picture he gave…living a life that allows Christ to come in and "be Himself" in your heart. What a great picture! I love the idea of Jesus being able to dwell in my heart and be comfortable enough there that He can just "be Himself" and do as He pleases.
The thing we have to look at in these verses though is how. How can He be Himself in our hearts? What does that look like? The "so that" at the beginning of verse 17 tells us that it is a consequence of living in His Spirit. When we allow ourselves to be strengthened by the power of the Spirit, Christ can have free-reign in our hearts. How do we get power through his Spirit? Ironically, I think we get power when we become weak. In our weakness, He is made strong!
I was so encouraged by his message. What a blessing!
